VIRTUE OF LOVE - Painting in the fifteenth century Florentine Wedding

Galleria dell'Accademia
8 June to 1 November 2010

The room is the hub of the house in the Renaissance is the most intimate and protected, where they consummated the marriage, it gives birth, you die.
It is above the shoulders, known as the Galleria dell'Accademia Adimari Box - which starts the show - and ornamented fronts of chests to offer unique testimony on the house Florentine Renaissance valuable on fashion, the celebration of festivals, on the rituals that accompanied marriage, the bride's engagement at the house of her husband.
In addition, the "art chamber" has the basic function of transmitting, represented through the stories, messages of warning and encouragement to conduct deemed exemplary for the couple, and this aspect helps us to focus now a cornerstone of civilization Florentine in the fifteenth century: the role of the family and spouses of individuals within it. Drawing from classical mythology, the Bible, historical episodes and literature of the time, you have all the facets of love, and duties that follow: the love that triumphs over adverse contingencies (Marriage of Thetis and Peleus), to virtues of obedience and self-denial that women should pursue (Legend of Griselda from Boccaccio's Decameron), the courage of the Roman heroine Lucretia and Virginia, who chose death as a source of redemption. Section to itself illustrates the deleterious consequences of love as sex magic, able to subdue
completely the will of man.
We must not forget, however, that marriage meant primarily to create a new breed and perpetuate the family. To this end, the last section of the exhibition is dedicated to the pride of the house, which states that tell stories through the founding of the famous races such as Aeneas and David or, following the texts of Petrarch, celebrate the triumphs of Fame , Time and Eternity. These images could also be painted on the desks aside, circular plates or good-luck celebration of the happy event, which traveled were a gift to the new mother, especially famous, what made the occasion of the birth of Lorenzo the Magnificent (The Triumph of Fame, New York , Metropolitan Museum).
Finally, the works on display, among which are reported pieces performed by famous painters such as Botticelli (Roman History of Virginia, Bergamo, Accademia Carrara), Filippino Lippi (History of Lucrezia Florence, Galleria Palatina), Pesellino (Stories of Susanna, Avignon, Musée du Petit Palais), open an extraordinary insight into the Florentine workshops engaged in the production of these objects, which just experienced the greatest fortune in the fifteenth century.
The exhibition is organized in collaboration with the Museo Horne in Florence will present a path for realizing the substantial nucleus of cells present in the paintings and connected to the whole collection originally belonged to Herbert Percy Horne, enriched for the occasion by some works exceptionally granted private collectors.
